How to stir fry steak
Veggies and meats are often cooked separately in stir fries. Usually meats are cooked in the wok first until they are just shy of cooked. Then they are removed from the pan and then veggies are stir fried.
Then, the two are cooked together and seasoned with sauces.
Because you have various cooking times of your ingredients you want to be strategic so as not to overcook your veggies.
In this steak stir fry recipe, you’ll want to cook the meat until about just done. Remove from the wok, and then stir fry the green onion. Then add the meat back in to stir fry together with the green onion.
How to make stir fry steak
Heat a pan on the highest heat setting.
Use at least 2 tbsp oil. Wait until oil is shimmery and heated.
Stir fry your onion first.
Move your veggies around the pan constantly. After onion is slightly softened (3-5 minutes), remove from pan.
Then wipe down the pan and place it on high heat. When the pan is hot, add in oil. When oil is shimmery, add in sliced steak. Stir fry for 3-5 minutes, until steak is almost all cooked through.
Then add back your onions and season with sauce mix.
Stir fry another 1-2 minutes until the sauce is well integrated into the stir fry steak.
How to season stir fry
Flavor each component of your stir-fry separately first, and then together.
Add seasoning to your meat (salt and pepper) and allow to sit for a few minutes.
Afterward, add seasoning to your veggies as they cook separately.
When you mix the meat back in to the veggies to cook, season again. Popular seasonings are some kind of sauce:
- soy sauce
- oyster sauce
- fish sauce
- black bean sauce
Price Comparison
How much did I spend on this dish? Keep in mind these ingredients made 2 servings. I’ll be realistic and count a restaurant serving as 2 portions. New York steak ($8), green onion ($.75), butter ($.50), soy sauce ($.25), oyster sauce ($.25).
Restaurant ($18) vs. Home-Made ($9.50)
So eating a steak stir fry at a restaurant costs almost double what it costs to make it yourself at home. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
If you eat at higher-end steakhouses, you could be paying between $40-100 for a ribeye steak vs. buying it yourself for $30-40 for a similar quality of meat. I am a simple gal and usually get my steaks from Costco or Ralph’s and that usually costs me between $8.99-9.99/lb vs. $30-50/lb for a restaurant steak.
I highly recommend that you make steak at home for the sake of your financial future. It really adds up over time. If you are celebrating something special, go ahead and splurge on that fancy steakhouse once in a while. But from what you can see with these numbers, you are paying a huge premium for eating steak at a restaurant.
